A fuel pump is a pretty simple little device. It has two wires which run a DC motor, so if you wire it up wrong it will pump backwards! There is an in and an out port, so if you mix up the hoses it will pump gas from the carbs into the tank! So, a little experimentation may be required before you just jam a fuel pump in there.
Fuel pumps are common in bikes made in the mid 1980's and beyond, but many bikes made into the 2000's don't have them. A fuel pump will often work off of a fuel pump relay, so if you test your pump and find it to be good, the problem may be in the relay. Consult your manual about this.
In a pinch you can sometimes just remove the pump and let the tank gravity feed into your carbs. However if the bike was made for a fuel pump, it may not perform well without it.
