Finding a project motorcycle is obviously an important first step. If you talk around to friends and family, you'll find that lots of people know people who know people who have some motorcycle rusting away in their sheds or back porches or whatever. Just work your network a bit.
Craigslist is usually my go-to place, because I buy a couple bikes a month. Consider looking in surrounding cities too, I usually have about a 300 mile radius wherever I am. Sometimes you get better results if you post a "motorcycle wanted" ad on craigslist.
Ebay can be ok, or your local paper. Sometimes universities will have message boards and you can look there. Just utilize the resources of your community to find what you are looking for.
